Naturopathic medicine is a primary health-care profession that focuses on the promotion of health, assessment of the physical and mental condition of an individual, and the diagnosis, prevention and treatment of diseases, disorders and dysfunctions. It does this through the integrated use of therapies and substances that promote the individual's inherent self-healing mechanisms. The principles underlying the practice of naturopathic medicine include: Utilization of therapies that minimize the risk of harm and are the least invasive, in order to restore health. (First, do no harm.) Recognition and support of the inherent self-healing ability of the individual. (The healing power of nature.) Identification and treatment of the underlying cause of disease. (Treat the cause.) The primary role of the naturopathic doctor is to educate and support patients in taking responsibility for their health. (Doctor as teacher.) Treatment of the whole person through individualized care. Prevention of disease through encouraging a healthy lifestyle and controlling risk factors.

Naturopathic at Elemental Therapies
Dr. Michelle Salga, is the new Naturopathic Doctor at Elemental Therapies.
The natural approach and finding the root cause of stubborn health concerns is the approach that Dr. Salga takes to treat her patients. The goal of treatment is to get rid of the problem for good and not just mask the symptoms using multiple medications. Dr. Salga realizes the importance of truly LISTENING to her patients and considering all of details of their concerns to properly investigate what is going on a holistic level.
Naturopathic treatment includes a variety of natural methods – including acupuncture, diet and lifestyle counselling, homeopathy, herbalism, physical medicine and hydrotherapy. These non-invasive treatments aim to heal the body to avoid the use of medications or surgery whenever safely possible.
Dr. Salga uses an analogy to explain the logic behind naturopathic medicine, as follows: The car engine light goes on, logic tells you not to simply rip out the wires for the signal to shut off (medications treating the symptom). Instead, you want to look under the hood to see where the problem lies. Once the problem is fixed, the engine will work properly again and the light flashing on the dash board will shut off (problem solved, symptoms go away).
The naturopathic approach and treatment is different for everyone, even those suffering with the same diagnosis, since we are all individuals, unique and different. Naturopathic treatments, when prescribed by a licensed naturopathic doctor are safe and effective with the aim of improving quality of life as soon as possible.
